Diploma in TESOL Course Content
To kick off your training you will start with the 120-hour online TESOL course that will set you up with all the basic teaching skills and English language knowledge required by every new ESL teacher. Take a look at our 120-hour TESOL course page for full details of this section of the course.
Upon completion of this initial stage, you can then start on the main diploma section of the course. During this part of your training you will need to conduct a significant amount of independent research on advanced-level teaching subjects. This section of the course is divided into 11 separate modules:
- Module 1: Study Skills
- Module 2: A Brief History of ELT
- Module 3: Second Language Acquisition
- Module 4: Course Design
- Module 5: Discourse Analysis
- Module 6: Material Design
- Module 7: Phonology
- Module 8: Assessment Methods
- Module 9: Classroom Management
- Module 10: Embedding Learning Technologies
- Module 11: Continuing Professional Development
- Summative Task (Thesis)
The eleven modules each require about 21 hours of study. The final summative task should take about 20 hours to complete. Therefore, you should expect this section of the course to take around 250 hours. With the accompanying 120-hour TESOL course the total study time is around 370 hours. To ensure you have enough time to work through the course at your own pace, you will be given up to one year to complete all the required elements.
Diploma in TESOL Course Aims
Our online Diploma in TESOL course aims to provide an appreciation of a whole range of teaching issues from learning theories to material design. By completing the course you should find that you have a clearer understanding of your role as an English language teacher.
Working through the course will not only improve your research and writing skills but also help develop a wide range of transferable skills from essay structure to question development.
Diploma in TESOL Course Assessment
Your progress through the course is assessed on a continuous basis. After working through the materials for each module you will then complete a multiple choice test for that section of the course. Your answers for each module test will be marked automatically and your progress displayed on a bar chart. This testing procedure is repeated for each of the eleven modules that make up the course. The final stage is to submit the research thesis as outlined in the summative task.
Once you have successfully completed all of the module tests and the research thesis, you will receive your online Diploma in TESOL certificate.
Tutor Support
This course comes complete with the support and assistance of an experienced online tutor for the duration of your studies. You will be able to contact your tutor at any time with any questions or problems you may have, and they will respond with helpful advice as quickly as possible. Your tutor for the diploma course will be a highly qualified and experienced teacher trainer. They will have been a practicing English language teacher and have a minimum of ten years experience of classroom teaching and teacher training.
Optional Teaching Practice
Another bonus with this course is that it includes the option of additional teaching practice without the need to attend a training center. This option allows you to further your teaching knowledge and gain some classroom experience before you start work in your first proper teaching Job. There are two different options to choose from:
Option 1: You can find a school or language center of your choice (either in-class or online) and teach your lessons there. The school will sign off that you have completed these lessons and your documents will be sent to ITTT for verification.
Option 2: You can find your own student/s and teach the lessons independently at a location of your choice, either face-to-face or remotely. You will need to video one of these sessions (1 hour) and send it to ITTT with your other documentation for verification.
