Washback

Relates to the tendency to teach to an external or internal test, rather than to the students’ weaknesses. Also referred to as backwash. When the outcome of a course is a final test, it is sometimes used as the basis for the teaching. Washback can therefore interfere with the natural order and sequence of learning and can also mean that areas not on a final test are never taught.
