SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol)
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is a research-based instructional model designed to make content comprehensible for English language learners (ELLs) while promoting their language development. SIOP includes eight components: lesson preparation, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice/application, lesson delivery, and review/assessment. This model provides a framework for planning and delivering effective lessons that integrate language and content instruction. SIOP helps teachers create supportive learning environments, use instructional strategies that enhance understanding, and assess student progress in both content and language.
