Kohlberg's theory on moral development is useful when thinking about classroom discipline. The theory is related to cognitive development (in boys) and how this passes through a series of levels or stages. Level 1 is referred to as the preconventional level, Level 2 the conventional level, and Level 3 is the postconventional or principled level. Each level has two stages giving six stages overall.
