CALLA (Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach)


The Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) is an instructional model designed to help English language learners acquire both language skills and academic content simultaneously. Developed by Anna Uhl Chamot and J. Michael O'Malley, CALLA integrates language learning strategies with subject matter instruction. It emphasizes the development of cognitive and metacognitive strategies, such as organizing information, summarizing, and self-monitoring, to enhance both language proficiency and academic achievement.
