Affective Filter

The affective filter is a theoretical concept in second language acquisition proposed by Stephen Krashen. It refers to the emotional factors that can influence language learning, such as motivation, anxiety, self-confidence, and attitude. A high affective filter means that negative emotions are blocking the acquisition process, while a low affective filter indicates a more conducive emotional state for learning. In TEFL, teachers aim to lower the affective filter by creating a positive and supportive classroom environment, using activities that build confidence, and reducing stress and anxiety.
