Teaching Vocabulary
The concept of teaching vocabulary to students of a foreign language is not impossible but must be approached carefully. There are several ways to deliver the information to students so that they learn the English language ’s vocabulary. For example, Joseph Pettigrew from Boston University posted an interesting article online that gives suggestions on how to go about presenting and teaching vocabulary to students.
Pettigrew suggests teaching methods that include simple, old-fashioned English language tools such as synonyms and antonyms. Synonyms may be used in matching exercises and antonyms may be used in exercises matching opposites. He also suggests using fill in the blank sentences as a form of exercise. Lesson Planning
Every lesson and class is different. By mastering and creating your own lesson plan, it brings you one step closer toward having a better grasp of the content and methods you are about to teach.
A lesson plan is a structure for a lesson. The content depends on what the teacher wants to achieve in the lesson and how they hope to achieve it. Callum Robertson states that:
‘If you imagine a lesson is like a journey, then the lesson plan is the map. It shows you where you start, where you finish and the route to take to get there.’
This is particularly helpful for inexperienced teachers as they may want to produce very detailed plans, stating clearly what is happening at particular times throughout the lesson. However, as teachers gain experience and confidence they develop... [Read more]

Creating Materials
In my experience of teaching English, I think the most fun I and my students had was with created materials, or realia, used in conjunction with the planned lessons in the text. As a photographer, I had a number of images that could be printed out and used in games, for vocabulary lessons and also as a basis for dialogues created by the students themselves.
An article about realia by Stefan Chiarantano (2005) describes using plastic fruit, toy animals, Christmas cards, maps and other items to introduce new vocabulary to his young students. Cultural items, such as the Christmas cards, can also be used to teach students about customs in other nations. They are often very curious about other customs and their very curiosity will improve their attention spans and help them... [Read more]
