Input hypothesis - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TESOL Glossary
One of the five hypotheses of Krashen’s SLA theory. In the input hypothesis Krashen makes the distinction between acquisition and learning. Lesson Planning Part 5 Lesson Plan Procedure Engage - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL-TESOL Courses
So, now we're going to fill the actual procedure of the lesson plan out itself. We mentioned at the start, the first thing we do, is to get some general information about the class that we'll be teaching and then, in order for someone to be able to cover our lesson, we need to present enough information in our lesson plan that they can actually carry it out. What I'm going to do is for each stage of the lesson, I'll indicate what I'm going to do in the lesson and then, we'll cut away from that to have a look to see how that will actually be achieved. So, our lesson is going to be based on a 45-minute lesson and the first phase is going to be the engage phase and it's going to be a straight arrow ESA lesson. I'm going to take approximately five minutes on my engage phase and in... [Read more]

Related to Krashen’s Monitor hypothesis, where he suggests three types of monitor user: over users, optimal users and under users. The monitor functions to check what we are going to say against what we know and either allow the thought to be spoken or held back. Over users of the monitor speak erratically because of the time they are using to check their own thoughts before speaking. Under users often are confused in their speech because they did not monitor their thoughts. Optimal users get the balance right.

Universal grammar - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TESOL Glossary
The UG hypothesis suggests that all languages have some underlying similarities which are considered fundamental to language itself (see Chomsky). Noam Chomsky suggested that humans are born with an innate ability to learn languages. His theory posited that exposure to language alone could not account for the fact that almost everyone learns their Native language without formal instruction.
