The zero conditional has the structure If + present tense sentence + present tense sentence. It is used to describe facts or things that are generally true. An example could be; If you heat water, it boils (both clauses in the present tense). The ‘if’ statement does not have to be at the start of the sentence. For example; Water boils if, you heat it.  [Read more]

This is used to describe situations and results that are likely to happen in the future. The first conditional has the structure If +present simple+will. ‘Will’ can be replaced by any modal verb, such as ‘may’, ‘might’, ‘can’, ‘should’ or ‘must’. An example could be “If it is sunny, I will go to the park later”.  [Read more]

The third conditional is used to describe what could have happened if a situation that happened in the past had been different. An example could be: If I had left the house a few seconds earlier, I wouldn’t have missed the bus. The third conditional takes the form (if + past perfect, would + have + past participle).  [Read more]

It is possible to combine a third conditional clause with a second conditional clause to form the mixed conditional. Probably the most common example of this would be in this structure: If past perfect (3rd cond), would + base form (2nd cond). The word "born" is an adjective and means "having started life". Let's take a look at an example sentence. "I was born in Germany but my sister was born in France".
