Being an EFL teacher is not an easy job, although it is very rewarding. Challenges depend on an individual. However, there are a few common problem situations. One is to establish a rapport with a class. Surveys, needs analysis, question games may help to produce a good first impression and learn about the class. They say: Well begun is half done. Beside the initial rapport it is important to stay positive and continue motivating attendees. Class warmers enhance the effective atmosphere for learning. Very often teachers have to come across the class with mixed level of English. The unit discusses several strategies a teacher can apply to deal with this problem, like using differentiated tasks or pairing weak and advanced students. Somewhat similar situation is connected to the different pace at which students complete the tasks. A teacher must be prepared to give additional fun task to faster learners. It is natural that students want to use their native language when they do not understand something or feel they do not have enough English vocabulary. A teacher should do the best to avoid the L1usage by using activities and tasks appropriate to the level, explaining in clear language and responding only in English. Each situation has a decision. A teacher must be creative to overcome problems. Where there is a will, there is a way.
