In this unit, I was able to review several important points regarding the use of authentic materials and textbooks. The advantages of authentic materials are: they are more interesting to students by virtue of the fact that they are real; they boost student confidence when understood; they can be geared toward students? individual interests. One of the benefits of created materials, on the other hand, is that they can be matched with the students? particular language level.
Another point I was able to review in this lesson is that of the advantages and disadvantages of textbooks. The advantages of textbooks include: students expect them; it offers a syllabus appropriate for the students? particular level; it offers a balanced combination of grammar and vocabulary, etc.; it offers a progressive continuation from one level to the next; and it offers ideas for new teachers to experiment with.
Disadvantages of textbooks are: it is not tailored to the specific interests of the students; it can appear boring to students and thus they might not like it; they are often not specific to students? first language; it undermines the construction of lessons that are student centered.
Textbooks can be best utilized if: they are not used for the entirety of a lesson; if you pick, choose, and adapt materials in order to best suit the needs of the students; if you approach the textbook critically, use it selectively, and try out new ideas independently.
