Unit eleven discusses receptive skills (reading and listening). We use these skills for a purpose, for entertainment, or both. The unit notes receptive skills require more than just our eyes and ears, but also pre-existing knowledge. We use receptive skills in many different ways: to predict content, scan text or dialogue to find specific information, skim to understand the gist, concentrate to acquire detailed information, and deduce beyond literal meanings. Potential problems are in the language presented, topics, and tasks. Listening can be more difficult than reading because students can review presented text multiple times, but this isn?t always true for listening. Carefully selecting text and pre-teaching difficult or unknown language and structures when necessary can help with language difficulty. Careful selection of topics is also important. Topics that are of no interest to the students are going to be more difficult than ones the majority is interested in because interesting topics can increase motivation in students. Not all students are interested in the same things, so it is important to create interest outside of the selected topic through class discussion, showing pictures, and other activities that are part of the ?engage? phase of the lesson.
