This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The two Productive skills discussed in this unit are Speaking and Writing. When it comes to the skill of Speaking, two aspects of speaking are to be explored, those being Accuracy and Fluency. Accuracy in speaking is all about using the correct language, with the activities being controlled so the language is used correctly. An accuracy activity might entail drilling and prompting, or the amount of control on the activity can be minimized with guided dialogues and role-play. Fluency activities should allow more freedom and experimentation with the language, allowing students to communicate at a certain flow while communicating something. Activities involving fluency could be discussions, debates, communication games, just about anything that allows the students to 'test' what they've learned through speaking and writing. There are additional issues to address with writing that extend beyond speaking, those being handwriting, correct punctuation, spelling, and even creative writing.
Regarding Productive skills, I have learned that confidence is very important, as there are many issues that may hinder a student's ability to excel in areas of speaking and writing. Feeling embarrassed in pronouncing a word incorrectly, having sloppy penmanship, or general lack of interest can hinder productive skills. It is important for the teacher to make students feel comfortable despite the fact that mistakes might be made.
