After this unit, I'm feeling way more confident about being able to effective run/teach a class of students whose native language is not English. At the moment I'm in a classroom teaching English to L1 and L2 learners. I took this course so that I would feel more comfortable with L2 learners in terms of being able to meet their needs more effectively. Before, I felt lost as to what they needed. Now I have a better idea of how they differ from native English speakers. The reminder about the at behaviour and attitude of the teacher and the effect on the classroom was great. I think that I will put that up in my classroom somewhere so I see it often. I enjoy teaching my students and thus I find I tend to have a caring and enthusiastic attitude in class. But I want my students to see it too. I also liked the needs analysis and negotiation. I find with teenagers, getting them to buy into what is being taught, and if they feel they are being heard in terms of their needs, then they tend to buy in more fully. I think as well that I need to use more games in my classroom. Although I'm aware of the importance of keeping activities short do deter boredom, I tend to not incorporate games very often. Many of my colleagues do this well, but maybe I have this subconscious (but now not so subconscious) belief that they don't learn as much through games. I will have to try it and see how it works.
