There are four things that students need to do with new language; be exposed to it, understands its meaning ,understand how it's constructed and be able to practise and produce it.
Teaching vocabulary is very important issue for the students. What makes the vocabulary easy or difficult? It depends on similarity to students' own language, similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriacy. While selecting the vocabulary, teachers can follow the criteria like apropriacy to the students, task, frequency and teachability. Also teachers can use ESA method teaching vocabulary. For engage part, we can use realia, mime and actions, pictures, contrast, discussion, discovery. For study part, we can use gap-fill exercises, word searches, crosswords, matching exercises, example sentences etc. For activate part, we can use open class, small group or pair discussion, role play, debate etc.
Teaching English, students need to know about the grammar forms and what the language means, how/when it is used, spoken or written form. We can also use the ESA method for teaching grammatical structures. In addition to this, language functions include areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting etc. We can use the ESA method to teach as well.
