ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) is a teaching method which allows teacher to be flexible and effectively involves students into a lesson. There are different structures of a ESA lesson such as \"Straight Arrow\", \"Boomerang\" and \"Patchwork\", however all of them should start with an Engage stage and end with an Active stage. During Engage stage teacher must aim to have high student talk time and ensure that every student participates. During Study stage students should be learning new English language concepts and teacher should elicit as much as possible from the students. During Active stage teacher should encourage students to use any of the language they already know and combine it with what they just learnt as freely as possible since the focus is more on fluency than accuracy. Corrections should reflect the stage of the lesson, it would be appropriate for more correction during Study stage when students are learning new language concepts. During Engage and Active stages students are encouraged to communicate as much as possible and in order not to interrupt the flow correction should be kept at the minimum. While correcting is important praising the students is equally as important, I also have learnt that it is important to distinguish between mistakes and errors. A mistake is considered to be a slip of the tongue or pen and student is able to correct himself or herself yet an error is more deeply ingrained and student might be not able to do it.
