This unit provided instruction for creating an effective learning environment. Teaching English, or any subject for that matter, is not just about giving out instruction and drilling grammar exercises. Teaching also involves building supportive, respectful relationships with one's students as well as maintaining a classroom environment that is welcoming, non-threatening, and organized. As the teacher, I have the important role of setting the tone for the classroom. My voice, gestures, and eye contact all have the potential to boost positive learning or detract from it. I will be looked upon as a model for correct English-speaking and communication. While there are many opportunities in which I, as the teacher, will be the primary talker, there are also many opportunities in which I can promote student talk time. Depending on the activity, students can gain a variety of experiences by working in pairs or small groups. Although talking is typically viewed as a welcomed activity in a language-learning classroom, it will be necessary to regulate noise level and maintain discipline. I, as the teacher, can maintain discipline most easily by showing myself to be prompt, organized, responsible, respectful, encouraging, and knowledgeable. Students are more likely to want to contribute to a positive learning environment if they feel engaged in the process, confident in themselves and their teacher, and satisfied with their progress.
