There are five different type of tests to evaluate students:
1-Placement
2-Diagnostic
3-Progress
4-Practice
5-External proficiency
1-It calls also level test. The students are tested in all four skills in a progressive way and it's designed to allow the teacher to place new students in to the correct class based on their language level.
2-It's given at the start of a course and it allow teachers to see weaknees and strenghts of the students, so that the teacher can focus his/her planning on students' gasp in knowledge.
3-It's used periodically to see what language has been remembered and what language has been forgotten. It includes all four skills and it's often required by the school.
4-It's used for internal and external exams and so it should be as near as possible to the style and contenent of the real exam.
5-There are three categories of external examination. They can be general english tests, business english tests or academic english tests. The general english tests are cambridge assessment. They are used for work and study purpose and there are 5 different level: KET,PET, FCE, CAE, CPE.
In the business english tests, we find the cambridge BCE, BULATS and TOEIC.
While in the accademic english tests, there are TOELF (require by most US university) and IELTS.
