This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit talks of common issues a teacher might encounter in the classroom. The first lesson can be quite difficult as it must be made clear if the students are comfortable with each other or not. Afterwards, the teacher must form a rapport with the students, and find out the English level of each student. Another problem is if there are students who are at different levels. In order to solve this, a teacher may split the students in order to give different materials or pair the stronger students with the weaker. Large classes can be difficult to monitor for one, lone teacher. Therefore, it is vital to use worksheets, group activities and drilling. Students might feel compelled to use their native language while in class. In order to discourage this behavior, the teacher must level appropriate activities and encourage them to use English. Students might have difficulty listening activities. Teaching them the vocabulary beforehand is one way to solve it. From this unit, I feel that I learned that it is very important for a teacher to have a positive attitude. This can greatly influence a student?s level of engagement during the lesson. In turn, they will be able to become comfortable with peers and speaking in a language other than their own.
