This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This is a pretty essential unit; it has many important points about classroom management that I find very useful. It's broken down the components of management into body (eye contact, gesture and voice), position (sitting, standing, circulating as one monitors), classroom arrangement (orderly rows, horseshoes, group tables, etc.) and the prevention and response to problem behavior. As for myself, I plan to use some of these tips and tricks on my own classes. Unfortunately, my classroom is quite small and there is no room to rearrange seating. However, I could include a mini field trip in the school or outside to break up the routine and build more rapport with the students. I also enjoyed the information about position and how it affects the students and their discipline. Because the classroom is small and I wanted to promote a more intimate atmosphere, I have almost exclusively spent lessons sitting at the same table with the students. Now I see that that has been counterproductive and I should stand more as I give the instructions and introduce the students to new vocabulary, for example. Also, I need to make more eye contact with individuals, I think. At one point I lived in Japan, where it is impolite to maintain much eye contact, and I believe that lesson has stuck a little too firmly with me. As a teacher I need to make that connection more. This was a very helpful unit and I'm going to continue to review it and put it into practice.
