Unit 16 was more difficult since it covered the 5 types of conditionals and reported and direct speech. Even though I use the conditionals, I?ve had never thought about the five types let alone the structures of each type. The conditionals vary from the present tense zero conditional, which is generally true, to the mixed conditional (basically the blend of second and third conditional) that addresses a hypothetical situation in the past. I also didn?t realize that certain conditionals were used to express situations such as the second conditional is used to express dreams or fantasies while the third conditional is used to express regrets or excuses. Reported and direct speech was easier still the chart was useful to see that the direct speech in past simple changes to past perfect in reported speech. Backshifting was a new term for me but it makes sense that the pronoun and time changes have to be made.
