This unit provides guidance for teaching a new class and emphasises the importance of establishing a good relationship with the students from the very first lesson, rather than going straight into teaching grammar or complex vocabulary. It is important to find out the student's names, establish who may need more support and what the group and individuals are interested in. Doing this will make future lessons much easier for the teacher and will alleviate any fears the students may have about learning English. It is important to remember as well that some students may have had previous negative experiences of learning English and may be unwilling to participate. Using techniques like role play and pair work can help students become more confident and participate more, rather than insisting they must learn a certain grammar rule
