This unit covered testing and evaluation of students in an English language course. According to the unit, there are several types of tests, most of which are usually mandatory by language schools and universities. The student generally takes a placement test, which tells the school in which class they should be placed. Then, there is a diagnostic test in the beginning of the course, which helps the teacher evaluate where the students are in terms of their mastery of the language and on which areas to really focus in the lesson planning. Throughout the course, progress tests can be very helpful for the students and the teacher to gauge how much information the student is retaining. These progress tests also prepare the student for the usual end of the course examination. Then, there are practice tests for the external testing, such as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and the various Cambridge Assessment tests.
