This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit gives information on theories, methods and techniques when teaching English. Since they all have their advantages and disadvantages, there is no clear answer to the question which techniques are best to use. In general it is important to motivate the students, to expose them to the language and to them the opportunity to use it. An effective method to do this is the ESA method: Engage, study and activate.
This unit also describes helpful ways for teachers to get students to respond in class by asking them thought-provoking questions. A technique that is called elicitation. Elicitation gives learners the opportunity to speak freely in class and it keeps teacher talk time at a minimum.
The unit also stresses the importance of giving feedback to students to encourage improvement and help them to evaluate their process. Feedback from the students helps the teacher to know if a lesson has been understood.
