Many students have got difficulty with conditionals and reported speeches because in order to understand these structures, they must understand the nature of why they exist in the first place (why we use them). However, oftentimes these understandings are reduced to bullets and remembering formulae (thus resulted in rote learning). This is also due to the teachers' making learning English parallel to learning, say, Mathematics or Physics where students remember formulae. The outcome is that students's learning ABOUT English, not learning English. This unwanted situation needs to be avoided by teachers' teaching English by connecting on how we use it in everyday life.
