This unit discusses the different ways teachers can evaluate and test their students. Students' language levels can be assessed via tutorials, evaluation by the students themselves, and testing. Common types of testing include: placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests, and external exams. I found this unit helpful because I had not thought so much about the benefits of testing. The information regarding the tutorials and student evaluation was very useful. I also didn't know before what all the different kinds of external exams were, especially for the Cambridge exams. This is all relatively straightforward. Students study best with teachers that they like, and will respond accordingly. Thus, the teacher should do everything in their power to make sure that the environment is warm and welcoming while still maintaining respect for the teacher. Teachers should use gestures and eye contact to engage the students, and should not get visibly angry with students when they don't understand. Likewise, when a student has bad behavior, the behavior should be addressed, not the student. Finally, seating arrangements facilitate learning and should be taken into account.
