This unit focused on teaching phonetics to English students. It examined many different elements of phonetics, and attempted to make the rules of as clear as possible. It examined stress, intonation, pronunciation and how to teach all of these in a classroom. It offered demonstrations of each of these as well as an in depth explanation of the many different sounds we make speaking English.
I found this unit to be very useful. Recently I have begun teaching Phonics to my classes. At the moment, we are just starting to blend sounds together; however, I really needed some direction and ideas for how to better teach phonics. This chapter has broadened my horizon and given me many new ideas. I would love to teach stress and intonation as well as pronunciation to my students. I think all of these skills are necessary for English students, yet very tricky for teachers to explain. This chapter did a great job helping my better understand the rules and how to teach them. I will definitely keep this chapter as a reference.
