This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Teaching a new class it is important to build a rapport between the students, find out about the students, find out about the students' needs/aspirations with English and find out the English level of each individual class member. Some good warmers are hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters, and memory games. Some ways of dealing with the varying levels of understanding in the classroom are: using different materials, same material, different tasks, not doing anything and pairing stronger students with weaker ones. For larger classes it's best to use worksheets, pair/group work, clarity, choral repetition, appoint group leaders and pay attention to dynamics. Students should be discouraged from using their native language unless it is absolutely necessary. It can be helpful, but not for speaking activities. Reluctant students can be met with pair work, controlled practice, role-play and the usage of tape recorders.
