This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit is focused on the productive skills (writing and speaking) ans is a continuation of the previous unit, which examined the receptive skills (reading and listening). When concentrating on this set of skills an effective teacher has always to keep in mind that the most correct approach is the one that integrates them all together in order to achieve a balance, becuase as different as they may seem they all serve the same purpose: to communicate.
Many approaches tend to confine writing to homework, there's a shared tendency to neglet this skill and therefore it ends up being the one that is always left behind and less mastered by the students. Whereas speaking is highly encouraged because it requires a lower degree of accuracy as any misunderstanding can be resolved immediately on the spot. When planning speaking activities a teacher has to find a balance between accuracy and fluency acivities, as both are extremely important aspects that need to be equally improved. In order to do so the teacher can choose between controlled activities (focused on accuracy) and creative communication (based on fluency), an important role in this phase is played by the degree to which the teacher is able to involve the students encouraging them to speak. When it comes to teaching writing skills a teacher has to consider some crucial aspects: the handwriting, the spelling, the genearal layout and punctuation and can always encourage creative writing.
