This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
A lesson that is taught to a class, regardless of the level, will usually focus on any of the following three categories: vocabulary, grammar and functions. The unit presents a very interesting and clear metaphor that explains how these three categories work together to build the knowledge that a student has of a specific language. \"Grammar is often said to be the tree trunk and branches of a language while vocabulary and fuctions are the leaves that add beauty and variety.\" One cannot communicate solely by knowing how the grammar of the language works, nor by only being familiar with vocabulary and functions of words. For this reason, it is important for a teacher to vary his or her lessons and transfer knowledge through a combination of these three categories.
The ESA methods are very useful to introduce new language. Lessons that focus on grammar and vocabulary can be taught using a straight arrow ESA approach, while lessons that focus on functions can be taught using boomerang or patchwork ESA structures. This is not a definite and unchangeable rule, although it tends to work very well. What is most important is that the teacher can identify which is the most appropriate structure depending on the class being taught and the language that will be introduced.
