Teaching a new language requires a student to 1) be exposed to the language 2) understand the meaning of the language form being taught 3) understand how the language form is constructed, and 4) have a chance to practice the language form and produce it. When teaching vocabulary the teaching must know to select the vocabulary, why students need the vocabulary, and methods to teach the vocabulary. When teaching a language grammar structure the teacher must ensure that the student knows the meaning of the language, how the language is used, the forms and patterns of the language, and the difference between the spoken and written language. When teaching the function of a language (e.g. inviting, agreeing, suggesting the teacher should develop the most effective ESA method to teach that language function.
