As teaching grammar and vocabulary is very much different from functions-based lessons, an effective teacher will always plan and think about its appropriacy before utilizing any ESA method. When teaching grammar and vocabulary, ?straight-arrow? ESA approach is more commonly used because it enables the lesson to be conveyed in a more controlled and direct way, it holds true for low-level students in particular. While language function lessons stress the need for activation of language and are more effectively used with ?boomerang? and ?patchwork? type ESA lesson. Patchwork lesson requires as many Engage, Study and Activate phrases between study and activation. It allows wider scope of study amongst students and teachers, hence it keeps the interest amongst the students going during the process learning.
