Establishing rapport for the first lesson is more important than beginning the coursework. Students will leave their comfort zone to evolve into a more interactive learner. In fact, I can safely attest to this from experience. For any course I took, the first day always involved a type of activity that introduces students to their classmates. It is even more important to do so for English learners due to the fact that they need to be able to contentedly and confidently speak in their non-native language. They need to be able to think and speak out in English without being too concerned on how they sound. Only then will they be able to gradually succeed in mastering their English journey.
