This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Problematic situations can appear in all stages of a course. To try to make a course go as smooth as possible the first lessons should be used to build rapport between the students and also between students and the teacher. To begin a lesson properly students should get warmed up to motivate them. Here some warm up games like hangman etc can be of use. In all classes you should always try to speak English only, and also respond only to English. That way students should be discouraged to use their mother tongue. If you notice throughout the course that some students are way ahead of the others you need to decide what to do. Do you want to let them keep rushing ahead by giving them more difficult tasks or if you want to keep the pace steady so they don?t rush ahead too fast?
Another problem might be a too big class of 30 ? 100 students. In such cases the lesson plan must be adjusted accordingly. Also dealing with reluctant students might be problematic. To get them talking some special actions are required.
