Learning the Phonetics of English has been very interesting. I learned that speakers of English are rarely taught phonetics in schools and so teachers lack the confidence and skill to teach pronunciation effectively. I believe that native English speakers should be taught phonetics in school as learning this concept would be very beneficial for the teachers and students alike. Phonology is concerned with the systematic organization of sounds and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabet system of phonetic notation.
Furthermore, intonation, stress, and rhythm are important concepts in communication. Intonation describes how the voice rises or falls in speech while stress is the emphasis that is given to certain syllables in a word. In intonation, the voice may rise, fall or remain flat base on the message we want to convey either angry, surprise, or even boredom. The falling intonation indicates that the speaker has finished what he wants to say, the rising intonation requires an acknowledgment and the flat intonation indicates that speaker does not want to communicate. I believe that the key to speaking English fluently with good pronunciation is correct intonation, stress, and rhythm.
Finally, learning the phonemic alphabet is beneficial for teachers and students as it?s a standard pronunciation guide for all areas of English. If students are familiar with the IPA system, they can easily improve their pronunciation of words and make them better communicators of English.
