This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit, I reviewed valuable information regarding the teaching of special groups. There are different types of beginner students?absolute beginners have no experience at all; false beginners have had exposure do English but do not remember much of it; adult beginners are usually highly motivated; young beginners lack motivation but gain fluency easily; and beginners don?t know the Roman alphabet, who will need a lot of initial study and practice. In order to adapt one?s teaching to beginner students, one should attempt to do the following: to be as visual as possible; to control the pace of the lesson; to give simple instructions; to use coral repetitions; to encourage the use of English; and to give homework. Teaching individual students differs from teaching groups in some noteworthy ways; for example, teaching individual students has some advantages, such as the fact that students are usually highly motivated, and it is easy to develop a close relationship with them. There are some disadvantages, however, such as the loss of classroom dynamics, and the fact that some activities are impossible to carry out. Children have short attention spans, and so require a constant change of activities in order to stimulate their interest. It is important to keep lessons fun, varied and, and moving at a flowing pace, because younger students? motivation depends solely upon the teacher.
