I think that in the classroom phonetics are often overlooked because it not only presents a challenge to the student, but the teacher as well. I took a college-level linguistics class that I struggled with, despite English being my native tongue. With all of this in mind, as a teacher we need to understand the importance of phonetics and vow to teach it in our classrooms. With these types of lessons, a teacher must be increasingly clear and patient with students. Bringing games, models and tongue twisters to the class will allow students to maintain focus, and keep the lesson as palatable as possible.
