In my experience, the external tests are often English language learners' light at the end of the tunnel. Many of them use the external test they need to take as the ultimate goal, and the main reason they study as hard as they do. This can be beneficial because it gives them drive, a sense of purpose, and a concrete goal. However, it can also be problematic for a variety of reasons. Often times, the things they study get put into their short term memory as this is often what happens when studying for a test, and no real absorption or retention occurs. Additionally, if they don't do well or as well as they were expecting, then they feel like they failed and it can demotivate them to continue their studies past the test, or make them drop their dreams of studying in an English speaking country
