This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The final unit covered a variety of potential problems when teaching, particularly with teaching groups you have just met. It also offered solutions on how to navigate difficulties, such as how to begin to establish rapport with students in the first lesson, or how to keep students speaking English and not reverting to their native language. I think the section on how to help students speak more English was especially important for me, since I work with high school students of mixed ability. The tips for how to manage larger classes was also helpful, since all of my classes are larger. I have found that group and pair activities help with students motivation but it is especially hard to keep them speaking English in such a large classroom setting. I'd like to commit myself more to encouraging them to use English by responding to them only when they speak in English, and stating my expectations for that clearly from the beginning.
