This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
When providing material for lessons and planning lessons in general, there are many things to consider. A course book is standard and expected, but many teachers like to spice things up with both created and authentic materials as well. There are advantages and disadvantages to all, and it's a teacher's job to do their best to mix and match until they can fit all the advantages into the lesson, although that takes time. Course books provide standardized texts and lessons that have been tested and proven effective. Course books, however, are not all up to date and relevant to a specific group, as they are written for a general audience. As a result, it is wise to provide other materials, whether for supplementing, replacing, etc.. There are two different types of materials brought by teachers to enhance lessons: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are directly from a natively English-speaking country; things that native English-speakers would read, watch, or listen to themselves. They may be too difficult for beginners, but if used appropriately, they can motivate students and give them confidence when they are able to translate and understand the material. Created materials are materials that the teacher makes to suit the class. This means they are much more suited to a specific audience. They are also able to be graded for each TEFL level so they are even more suited to the class. These materials can be a great help in making a textbook-lesson more lively and relatable.
