When doing a course it's appropriate for teachers to evaluate and assess the students' language levels and progress at different stages. Students' levels may be assessed through tutorials, evaluation through students (questionnaires) and various types of tests (placement, diagnostic, progress and achievement tests). Each test has a specific purpose and is done at a specific stage of a course. There is also a particular type of test (practice test) that is used to prepare students for external examinations (TOEFL, IELTS...). External exams are taken to assess the learners' English level in general or in one or more particular skills. These tests are usually needed to be able to access foreign Universities or international working contexts.
