Unit 14
It is about the use of materials (authentic and non authentic) and course books.
Authentic materials: these are magazines, programs, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, films, videos, etc.
Advantages: they are real, interesting, motivating, students can gain confidence if they
understand them.
Created materials: they are designed by the teacher. For example: crosswords, flashcards, word search puzzles, role play cards, gap fill activities, picture stories, etc.
Course books: they consist of a set of materials (student's book, activity book, CDs, teacher`s book, flashcards, test books, dictionaries, etc)
Advantages: it provides a syllabus which is graded to a level suitable for the students, the materials have been tried, they normally have a balance of skills, etc.
Disadvantages: they are designed by all nationalities, exclusive use can be become predictable and boring, they dictate what is to be taught, etc.
