This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
There are four basic skills in any language which are equally important; reading, listening, speaking and writing. They are divided into two categories that are receptive skills and productive skills. Unit 11 is about Teaching Receptive Skills that is reading and listening. It focuses on the reasons and motives of reading and listening, how we read and listen, the problems with listening and reading, the solutions to the problems, language (reading versus listening) challenges and suggestions, choosing topics, creating interest, comprehension tasks and finally, an outline of a typical receptive skills lesson. I've learnt that it's important to incorporate all the basic skills whenever possible and using basic keys (e.g. choice of material, building interest, using material to practise different skills, etc.) into a lesson in order to a achieve a balanced and effective approach.
