The receptive skills reading and listening are the main topic of this unit.
The first paragraph focuses on providing the reader with a general intorduciton to the main skills that characterize any language: reading and listening (called receptive skills), speaking and writing (called productive skills). These skills are all equally important and therefore an effective teacher should consider all of them when planning a lesson, because the aim is always to obtain a balanced approach. More specifically as stated above, this unit is centered on the receptive skills: reading and listening. The tacher should keep in mind that there are always reasosn for reading and listening and that those reasosn can be divided into two main categories: reading and listening for a purpose and reading and listening for entertainment. Furthermore it's also very important to underline how the way a person reads and listens and therefore the understanding of the content depends on the level of expertise the person has mastered in the following areas: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, ability to focus on detailed information and deduct it from context. In order to avoid obstacles and problems the teacher should always try to facilitate the learning process by pre-teaching difficult vocabulary, by carefully selecting the texts, the topicsand the tasks. This way the interest of the students will be increased as well as the levels of concentration and attention.
