The difference between the first and second videos surprised me. While the teacher demonstrated a number of shortcomings in the first video, I found his dismissiveness, impatience, and his overall absence of rapport with the students to be the most objectionable characteristics of his teaching approach. The teacher's behavior in the second video illustrated the power of a smile and a few encouraging words and gestures to encourage students to actively participate in a lesson. I also noted the dramatic difference in the way identical teaching materials were used: so ineptly and ineffectually in the first video, completely engaging and illustrative in the second.
