Unit 14 discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using published textbooks to teach language. Textbook materials typically provide a progressive and gradable structure to develop language skills with continual reinforcement of previous vocabulary throughout. Your course is essentially pre-prepared and already includes previously targeted language structures/vocabulary. Using only textbook materials for language teaching however can result in boredom for the students as they rarely get to apply those language skills to real world situations (reading current news articles or magazines, practicing real phone conversations). The addition of created and authentic materials within the classroom is more likely to keep the students interested and motivated to learn and practice their new language.
