This lesson taught me that receptive skills, reading and listening, are tremendously important for students to build up. After outlining all the reasons and motives for reading and listening, such as for a purpose or entertainment, and what areas of understanding context are dependent on, such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, etc., the lesson went on to explain keys to effective receptive skill lessons. When teaching receptive skills it's important to choose interesting and varying material, pre-teach complex vocabulary if necessary and expose students to authentic and non authentic texts.
