Reading and listening are receptive skills, and are usually performed either for a purpose or for entertainment. There are 5 areas that are important for either area. 1. Predictive skills, e.g. reading a headline and figuring out what a story is about; 2. Skimming, where one looks for a general idea about the subject; 3. reading specifically to gain detailed information; 4. Scanning for specific information; and 5. deduction from content, e.g. understanding not only the specific meaning, but realizing that instructions or orders must be followed. The unit also deals with ways of teaching comparisons, and the different forms that must be followed, such as 'bigger', not 'more big'; and 'more formal' but not 'formaller'
