Evaluation and testing is an important part in assessing where your students current English levels are, how they are progressing in the course, and what they have learned and retained at the end of the English course. There are many different kinds of testing that a teacher can give students. Placement and diagnostic tests tell the teacher what the student does and does not know, allowing them to place them in the correct level so they can teach them more effectively. Progress tests can be given a few different ways. A teacher could give a formal (written) progress test to see what the students have retained thus far, or in some cases, teachers give the test informally. An informal progress test is not so much a test as it is the teacher observing the students on a day to day basis to see what they know.
Sometimes students will take external examinations that do not pertain to the English course they are taking in school. In this case, the teacher may provide practice tests for students to take which will help them study and prepare for their external tests. Testing does not have to be a negative aspect of the class and can be extremely beneficial when evaluating what you need to focus on in class or where to take the class next in terms of lessons.
