Unit 14 compares authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are anything that native teachers would hear or read-newspapers, magazines, films, menus, etc. These should be chosen carefully because they will not be graded for the level. However, since these materials are \"real\" they are typically more interesting to the student. Created materials are ones that the teacher makes in order to supplement whatever books or course materials they already have. Created materials could be word searches, gap-fills, crosswords, etc. Unlike authentic materials, these can be graded to level. Lastly, this unit provides advantages and disadvantages to using course books. Course books can be good because they provide a syllabus graded to the level of the student and typically have a good mix of grammar, vocab, and skills work. However, course books can sometimes be boring and not cover topics the students are interested in.
